Can I use this laying flat? Or does it only work upright?

I bought it specifically because it says you CAN use it horizontally...something I needed to do to be able to steam a crocheted afghan. It works BEAUTIFULLY in that position. No leaks, no problems at all. Love this steamer!

Could this be used on a couch to remove odor and sanitize?

Yes, but I would not say it successfully “deodorizes” the couch (the scent does not change). However, to sanitize, you can tilt the steamer completely without it dripping. If it drips, you probably have a lemon, and should exchange through Amazon (within the time frame) or contact the company for an exchange. Also, if you use faucet water a few times or two years have passed, then the steamer will definitely drip when tilted (not a lot, but enough to leave drop marks on the couch’s fabric).
