Our customers will often screw the strainer down to ensure it is securely placed. If you can find another way to ensure the pump is placed in a stable environment, it will still work great.

There are a wide variety of factors that go into such a decision.  A 750 automatic might be a nice choice.  Or, a 500 with a float switch would work.  A 2000 such at this would be top of the line and offer added assurance that you can move water out of your boat quickly.  Also, a consideration is how much water enters the boat?  Do you have through hull fittings with hoses such that a hose might develop a leak or blow off off the fitting?  How fast would water enter the boat in that situation?

What is the max head for this pump in feet

That might be a better question for a jet pump rather than this type of high volume no-pressure pump.  As you raise the output hose, the water volume will reduce, to the point that you will have raised the hose high enough that no water - not even a drip - comes out.  That would define "max head", but it's not a useful piece of information.  More useful questions might be "what is the output without a hose at all?" "what is the volume output if the hose is raised 1 foot, 2 feet, 3 feet, etc."  If you have more required lift than the pump has in capacity (found in the company literature)  then you would either need to reduce the height or get a pump with greater capacity.  Since this is likely to be used as a bilge pump, it's best to exit the pump, rise quickly to a little above the worst-case-waterline, and then gradually run downward toward the through hull fitting.  Max Head doesn't enter this installation - - maximum output/flow does.
